Africa-Press – Tanzania. Namungo FC have been eliminated in the group stage of CAF Confederation Cup, after losing 0-1 in their Group D away match to hosts, Nkana FC in Ndola, Zambia yesterday.
Nkana have therefore moved to six points, same as Egypt’s Pyramids and three less than leaders Raja of Morocco, while Namungo became the first side to be eliminated as they remained pointless after their fourth successive defeat.
The Lindi based- outfit that has made a maiden appearance in CAF club tournament, became the first side to get eliminated from the group stage.
Having won the reverse fixture 1-0 away in Dar es Salaam last weekend, reports from Ndola had it that Nkana started the game searching for another win that could see them revive their qualification hopes, before hosting Egypt’s Pyramids in the upcoming match day. But the first half was a story of rare chances, as Obedy Masumbuko and Diamond Chikwekwe led the hosts’ attacks, while Namungo depended on counter-attack sending their lone forward Stephen Sey behind the hosts’ defence.
After a goalless opening half, Nkana continued to press after the break searching for the opener. They finally had it after 71 minutes, when Harrison Chisala found substitute Freddy Tshimenga who scored past goalkeeper Jonathan Nahimana to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Namungo tried to snatch a late equaliser but in vain as they are with two games to spare. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Coton Sport consolidated their grip on 2020-21 Total CAF Confederation Cup Group B top spot, thrashing Zambia’s NAPSA Stars 5-1 in Garoua yesterday.
Coton Sport raised their tally to 9 points on top of Group B, four more than closest rivals Algeria’s JS Kabylie and five more than holders RS Berkane of Morocco, while NAPSA Stars remain bottom with one HEMED Morocco point.
