Africa-Press – Tanzania. The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has been awarded the title of Tanzania’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers 2025 at the recent Euromoney Awards held in London, United Kingdom.

The recognition is a testament to the bank’s dedication and rigor in driving digital transformation based on innovation, security, and financial inclusion for all.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday about the achievement, Mr Elibariki Masuke, Director of Retail Banking at NBC, on behalf of the Managing Director Mr Theobald Sabi, said the success is driven by the bank’s efforts to actively promote financial inclusion, particularly through significant improvements in its digital banking platform, ‘NBC Kiganjani.’

“Through NBC Kiganjani, we have opened the doors of financial services to all Tanzanians – urban and rural, large and small businesses, smartphone users and those with basic phones. Our USSD and App services are part of our mission to ensure that every Tanzanian participates in the formal economy,” he said.

Mr Masuke also highlighted other factors contributing to this success, including the innovation of digital services that address the real, everyday needs of Tanzanians, such as bill payments, money transfers, instant microloans, ticket purchases for transportation, and various other transactions.

“Moreover, the award committee recognized our efforts in developing digital infrastructure, where through technologies like NIDA verification, fingerprint authentication, and two-step verification, we have built a secure system that enables customers to register quickly without hassle – while also contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9,” he added.

“Furthermore, our collaboration with local Fintechs has been a major factor in impressing the award panel, given that many of the services within NBC Kiganjani are the result of partnerships with local service providers offering Tanzanian solutions to Tanzanian challenges. This demonstrates how local technology can drive genuine development and create employment opportunities for our youth,” Masuke emphasized.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr David Raymond, Head of Marketing at NBC, said it reflects market realities, noting that the bank is currently experiencing a significant increase in digital banking users, with over 70 per cent of all NBC transactions now conducted outside its branches, and digital user growth reaching 160 per cent – a clear indicator of Tanzanians’ readiness to embrace the digital economy.

“Services like ‘NBC Wakala Pesa’ have been instrumental in encouraging more Tanzanians to adopt banking services, as they simplify transaction processes and involve no cost in sending or receiving money,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ulrik Peter, Head of Digital Alternative Channels and Transformations at NBC, said that the bank will continue to strengthen its collaboration with local service providers (Fintechs) to research, design, and develop digital services that target and address Tanzanians’ real financial needs.

“By working closely with local service providers (Fintechs), we can design the right banking services that complement our various offerings, including social services such as schools, hospitals, and even commercial services,” he said.
