Africa-Press – Tanzania. MINISTER for Works and Transport, Prof Makame Mbarawa has said the new Wami Bridge in Chalinze Council, Coast Region is expected to be opened for use next month.

The minister revealed this during inspection of the project, where among other things, he directed the contractor to complete the remaining work in order to facilitate the use of the bridge.,

“The work is progressing well, it is my expectation that until September 20 this year you will have completed the remaining work so that the government can open the bridge for use,” he said.

He said the project which has reached 86 per cent include construction of a 513.5 metres and connecting roads with 3.8 kilometres.

Prof Mbarawa expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for releasing funds for development projects.

Briefing the minister about the project, Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) for Coast Region, Heririsper Mollel said that the contractor has completed the base of the bridge by 100 per cent and the upper section 256 metres of 513.5metres, which is equivalent to 50 per cent.

He said other works which have been completed include construction of culverts and laying 188 water pipes out of 206 which is equivalent to 91 per cent.

On construction of connecting roads, Eng Mollel said that so far a total of 3.4 kilometres have been completed.

The new Wami Bridge is being constructed at a cost of 75bn/- provided by the government. It is being executed by Power Construction Corporation

The old Wami Bridge was constructed in 1959 and it does not meet the needs of travelers who are using the route since it has only one lane that is narrow.

The old bridge is also situated on a steep slope which has been causing accidents and costing lives of many people, he explained.

After completion of the new bridge, the contractor will also repair the old bridge.

The new bridge will have a length of 510 and width of 11.85 metres and is constructed at a distance of 670 meters from the old bridge.
