Africa-Press – Tanzania. NMB Bank has opened one million farmers’ accounts in the past three years in an effort to support the growth of the agriculture sector and its contribution to the economy.

The bank’s Chief of Wholesale Banking, Alfred Shayo, stated yesterday the commitment of NMB to sponsor the Nanenane Agricultural Exhibition for the sixth consecutive year, with a total of 361m/- disbursed.

“We have opened over one million accounts for farmers in the past three years. In Dodoma, accounts have been opened for farmers in the grapes, sunflower, groundnuts, maize and sorghum sub sectors, among others. We intend to reach more agricultural sub sectors,” he said.

Shayo mentioned that the bank, through its social arm, NMB Foundation, has played a crucial role in providing financial literacy to farmer cooperatives, benefiting over 1450 Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) nationwide, reaching 500,000 farmers.

Regarding the bank’s sponsorship of the Nanenane International Agricultural Expo 2024, Mr Shayo reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting the growth of the agricultural value chain and enhancing its contribution to the economy.

“The sponsorship aligns with the bank’s long-term strategy to support the growth of the agricultural sector value chain from grassroots level. This shows the bank’s commitment to continue partnering with various stakeholders in the agricultural sector to improve its contribution to the national economy,” he said.

NMB’s support for the 31st Nanenane exhibitions complements government efforts to enhance agricultural sector growth and contribute to economic development.

Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule praised NMB Bank for its continued commitment to supporting the growth of the agriculture sector, noting that this year’s farmer’s exhibition has an international look and feel.

Senyamule acknowledged the increasing sponsorship from the bank each year since the region began hosting the event, urging the bank to continue supporting the government’s development efforts in the region.

“The bank’s sponsorship has helped the Nanenane exhibitions achieve an international standard. I want to thank the bank for this support, and I believe this year’s exhibition will be even bigger and better,” she said.
