RC: Raids at North Mara mine to end in July

Africa-Press – Tanzania. MARA: THE new Mara Regional Commissioner, Col Evans Mtambi says protracted conflicts between the North Mara Gold mine and the youth who invade the mine to steal gold ores will end in July this year.

Col Mtambi told the `Daily News’ that he would take as a matter of priority measures to deal with the invasion on the gold mine located in Tarime District as that was one of the tasks he was given after his appointment last month.

There have been frequent clashes between the North Mara Gold mine and people armed with traditional weapons who have been raiding the mine to steal gold ores leading to injuries and deaths.

The RC said he has directed the police force to change tactics of dealing with the invasion at the mine by reaching out to the surrounding communities to provide education on how they can benefit from on-going mining activities and encourage the young people to stop battery of heinous crimes against the mine.

The police would also reach out to other stakeholders such as the media, religious and traditional leaders, and influential people in the awareness campaign, he said.

“These are part of measures to deal with the problem in the relations between the mine and the surrounding communities but the government has a strategy for permanent solution to the problem and I can tell you it has reached advanced stages. All these invasion problems will end come July this year,” said the RC.

He added that since he was appointed as the head of the region and even before he was sworn in, there was the death of a young man who, together with his colleagues, had invaded a mine and was injured in clashes with the police before he later succumbed to the injuries.

“I hate killing of citizens but as a leader I don’t like invasions to the mine that is why even before I was sworn in, I began looking for a solution to the problem,” he said.
