Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has allocated 15bn/- to support the Mwenga Hydro Ltd power generation project located in Mufindi District, Iringa Region.
The funding was announced on Thursday during an inspection visit by the Rural Energy Board (REB) to the Mwenga Hydro Ltd project which harnesses the small hydro power potential of river waterfalls and wind energy to generate electricity.
A board member, Mr James Mabula, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rural electrification saying all projects will be executed as planned.
Mr Mabula represented the REB Chairman, Ambassador Jacob Kingu. He said 15bn/- has been channelled through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and that it will enhance the implementation and expansion of electricity generation at the Mwenga project.
“Through this government funding provided via REA the project is currently generating 4 megawatts of electricity from hydro sources,” said Mr Mabula.
Mr Mabula further reported that to date, the Mwenga project has connected approximately 8,000 customers, with REA playing a crucial role in achieving 100 per cent of these connections.
REA’s Manager for Energy Technologies, Eng Michael Kessy reaffirmed the agency’s continued support for the Mwenga project.
He emphasized that REA will keep providing financial assistance to ensure sufficient power generation that will help rural communities grow their economies.
