Africa-Press – Tanzania. RUKWA Region has spent over 16.52bn/- for the rehabilitation of roads stretching to 1,031.05 kilometres and 87 bridges during the 2020 – 2021 Financial Year (FY).
Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) Acting Rukwa Regional Manager, Eng Mgeni Mwanga told the ‘Daily News’ on Wednesday that over 13.6bn/- has been utilised on rehabilitation of trunk roads and regional roads and 87 bridges.
She further explained that rehabilitation of 278.2 trunk roads and 17 bridges has cost over 2.83bn/- whose work has reached 100 per cent of completion.
“Rehabilitation of regional roads spanning to 752.85 km and 70 bridges reached 96 per cent of completion,” she explained.
Eng Mwanga said that the rehabilitation of trunk and regional roads and bridges have eased the movement of people and transportation of cargo.
Rukwa region has a road network stretching to 1,250.84 km, which is supervised by the Ministry of Works and Transport via Tanroads out of which, trunk road has 415.86 km and regional road has 834.98 km.
Equally, truck and regional roads stretching 375.18 km have been rehabilitated to tarmac level.
Meanwhile, the Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Rukwa Region has launched investigation into alleged corruption deeds in construction of operating theatre at Matai Health Centre valued 200m/-
PCCB Rukwa Regional Commander, Daniel Ntera told a press conference early this week that five senior civil servants employed by Sumbawanga District Council (SDC) whose names are withheld are being investigated over the malpractice.
Mr Ntera was presenting an implementation work report between July and September this year.
He further emphasized that the corruption watchdog took action after the Uhuru Torch Race smelt a rat in the project
During the race, the national leader, Lieutenant, Josephine Mwambashi refused to lay a foundation stone after she uncovered that the project was being implemented at a snail pace and was substandard. It was further discovered that the funds have been subsequently diverted to other schemes without following proper procedures.
The Uhuru Torch Race also discovered that though the government disbursed 200m/- in 2019, yet the construction of the project had stalled since then.
The construction was meant to improve services including handling of obstetric emergency surgery, as well as obstetric emergency operation and subsequently improving maternal and new-born health services.
The services are currently available at the Rukwa Regional Referral Hospital in Sumbawanga Town about 90 kilometres.
Construction of the project was scheduled for completion in June 2020. The regional PCCB boss further explained that in September this year, Uhuru Torch Race inspected 18 development projects in Rukwa region valued 10,557,250,578.07/-.
