Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIAN Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has assured the citizens that the government has implemented robust strategies to tackle the persistent problem of water hyacinths in Lake Victoria, aiming to restore smooth social and economic activities in the affected areas.
During an inspection tour of the hyacinth control efforts at Kigongo-Busisi in Mwanza Region on Monday, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the sixth phase government for approving the release of funds to procure large-scale machinery for removing the invasive plants.
“I thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for authorizing the purchase of powerful equipment to eliminate the water hyacinths. This will facilitate the continuation of fishing, transportation, and other vital activities on the lake,” said PM Majaliwa.
He noted that the invasive species have significantly disrupted livelihoods, particularly fishing and transport, and emphasized that the newly acquired machines will help mitigate the problem effectively.
Majaliwa also commended local residents, especially fishermen, for their commitment and collaboration with government efforts to remove the hyacinths.
The Prime Minister directed the Office of the Vice President – Environment to continue the removal exercise until the lake is completely cleared, ensuring that social and economic activities can proceed without disruption.
Providing an update on the ongoing operations, Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Eng Cyprian Luhemeja, said the cleanup is currently focused on removing natural water hyacinths spread across more than 300 acres of the lake’s surface.
