Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA’S Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) said production of gas in two blocks of the Southern regions of Tanzania has increased from over 57 billion cubic feet to over 300bn cubic feet in four years since 2021.

This was revealed today by PURA Director General, Charles Sangweni during the authority’s meeting with Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) in Dar es Salaam, today, May 19, 2025 who said that out of the 300bn cubic feet produced, 142.35bn cubic feet came from the Mnazi Bay block, while 158.98bn cubic feet was produced from the Songosongo block.

Sangweni noted that in previous years, average annual production was 32.03 billion cubic feet at Mnazi Bay and 25.13 billion cubic feet at Songosongo.

He explained that the gas is produced for various uses, including electricity generation, industrial applications, household use, institutional consumption, and as fuel for vehicles.

Clarifying on Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs), Sangweni said:

“According to these agreements, investors use their funds to explore for oil and natural gas. If no resources are found, the area reverts to the government. However, if resources are discovered, revenues from the sale of those resources are used to pay royalties, recover the invested capital, and cover various taxes and fees. The remaining profit is then shared among the contract partners, including the government and TPDC.”

He emphasized the importance of PURA verifying the actual investment amounts and all implemented activities to prevent potential fraud by investors.

On her part, Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) representative Tausi Mbowe pledged the forum’s cooperation with PURA, particularly in public awareness initiatives and in supporting the implementation of strategies aimed at boosting the national economy.
