Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Assistant Director of the Africa Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ellen Maduhu, has said that Tanzania will continue to implement the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) pact, particularly in overseeing the core objectives of the pact.
The objectives of the pact emphasize peace, security, democracy, good governance, and gender inclusion to achieve sustainable development in the Great Lakes Region.
The director made the statement while presenting the national report on the implementation of the ICGLR Pact during the 19th Meeting of ICGLR National Coordinators held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Leading the Tanzanian delegation at the meeting, Ms Maduhu said that Tanzania, as an active member of the ICGLR, has continued to uphold and implement the specific objectives of the Pact that established the Conference, including ensuring peace and security in the region, promoting democracy and good governance, encouraging gender inclusion, and ensuring sustainable development.
Commenting on the peace and security matters in the region, the director said that Tanzania has for many years remained a peaceful and stable country while continuing to make various efforts to achieve lasting solutions to conflicts in the region through peaceful means.
Additionally, she highlighted Tanzania’s significant contribution in maintaining and strengthening regional security through its participation in conflict resolution, peacekeeping missions, and offering asylum to refugees from conflict-affected areas.
Moreover, regarding regional integration, she noted that Tanzania has continued to play a leading role in promoting integration through the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Through its efforts to address regional challenges, Tanzania facilitated the First Joint Meeting between the EAC and the DRC to discuss the state of peace and security in eastern DRC, which was held in Dar es Salaam in February 2025.
The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is an intergovernmental organization of the countries in the African Great Lakes Region.
Its establishment was based on the recognition that political instability and conflicts in these countries have a considerable regional dimension and thus require a concerted effort to promote sustainable peace and development.
Most notable among the conflicts that have had cross-border impacts or origins are the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which led to the loss of more than 800,000 lives, and the political instability in the DRC.
These conflicts constituted a major threat to international peace and security.
The organization is composed of twelve member states, namely: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.
