Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile, has confirmed progress on the rehabilitation of the MV Liemba ship in Kigoma Region, saying its works are 55 percent complete.
Kihenzile made the remarks today, February 20, 2026, during an inspection tour of development projects in Kigoma. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of the vessel’s rehabilitation and emphasized its importance in stimulating economic growth and improving transportation on Lake Tanganyika.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister also toured a search and rescue boat purchased by the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation. He explained that the boat will help enhance capacity to respond to maritime accidents, emergencies, and criminal activities on Lake Tanganyika.
Kihenzile noted that the investment aims to strengthen the safety of passengers and their property, while improving marine transport services. He stressed that the government will continue investing in transport infrastructure to ensure the sector contributes fully to national development.
In a separate engagement, the Deputy Minister visited the ongoing airport construction project in the region. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of all the projects he inspected and urged project supervisors to ensure they are completed on time and in accordance with required standards.
