Africa-Press – Tanzania. DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan and her Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering relations between their nations.
The two leaders, following bilateral discussions during President Mohamud’s official state visit, expressed their determination to establish a formal system aimed at enhancing cooperation for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
At the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the two Heads of State made their commitments after wrapping up President Mohamud’s state visit at an invitation of Dr Samia.
President Samia acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the people of Tanzania and Somalia, underscoring the opportunity provided by President Mohamud’s visit to further strengthen ties. President Mohamud’s visits marked a significant moment as the first official visit by a Somali national leader since Somalia’s accession to the East African Community (EAC).

Both leaders stressed the importance of unity within their countries as a means to advance the broader goal of African unity, echoing the vision of the continent’s founders.
“Our objective is to enhance the consultation sessions between the two nations by convening meetings involving sectoral stakeholders, they aim to pinpoint areas and projects of collaboration beneficial to both parties.
Consequently, we have reached an agreement for sectoral ministers and experts to convene, deliberate, and subsequently identify areas for cooperation,” President Samia said.
In the official government talks between the government of Tanzania and Somalia, according to President Samia have touched on many strategic and important areas for both nations.
Tanzania commended Somalia’s efforts towards restoring peace and security within its borders and pledged continued support in various international forums and initiatives aimed at promoting stability in the region.
“We commend Somalia for its sustained efforts to restore security and peace in their country. As a delegate of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council and other international forums, Tanzania will continue to assist efforts to restore peace in the country.”
Dr Samia said. President Samia reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to providing training opportunities in defence, security, and government services, demonstrating the country’s readiness to assist Somalia in capacity building. The leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation in social sectors, particularly in health and education.
Furthermore, Tanzania promised to collaborate with Somalia in implementing various aspects of regional cooperation to ensure mutual benefits for both nations as members of the East African Community.
President Mohamud expressed gratitude to the Tanzania government and its people for their unwavering support, especially during challenging times.
“I would like to thank the government of Tanzania and its people for standing by us even in times when we had challenges with our neighbours,” he said.
He reiterated Somalia’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Tanzania, emphasising the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) as a testament to their shared goals and aspirations.
The Somali President’s visit to Tanzania coincided with the 60th anniversary of the Union between the former Republic of Tanganyika and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar, highlighting the historic ties between the two countries.
President Mohamud’s participation in the celebrations underscores the significance of Tanzania as a key partner for Somalia in East Africa.
