Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE) has highlighted significant milestones achieved in promoting the country’s trade during President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s four year tenure.
Among them is Tanzania’s participation in the Dubai Expo, where the country signed 36 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth 7.49 billion US dollars (about 17.35 trillion/-).
TANTRADE Director General Latifa Khamis told journalists in Dodoma yesterday that the government remains committed to enhancing trade and economic growth, with remarkable progress made since President Samia assumed office.
She noted that under President Samia’s administration, Tanzania has experienced a significant increase in export volumes, particularly in agricultural products and textiles.
Ms Khamis reported that exports have grown substantially over the past four years, driven by trade agreements with neighboring countries and key global markets.
“We have worked diligently to position Tanzania as a competitive player in regional and international trade,” she said, adding that “the government’s strategic partnerships have expanded market access for Tanzanian goods, increasing demand and improving livelihoods for many citizens.”
Regarding the Dubai Expo, Ms Khamis stated that the signing of 36 MoUs resulted in the creation of 200,000 jobs. Additionally, 740 Tanzanians participated in the event, while 928,469 international visitors visited the Tanzania pavilion.
As President Samia continues to steer Tanzania toward a new era of trade and economic development, Ms Khamis expressed optimism about the future.
With ongoing efforts to enhance trade infrastructure, support local businesses, and promote sustainable trade practices, TANTRADE is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s economic landscape.
“We are excited about the journey ahead and remain committed to building a prosperous Tanzania through trade,” she added.
Another key event that boosted the country’s trade was the 2023/24 Expo Doha Horticulture Exhibition, where 13 Tanzanian companies participated, generating sales worth 370 million/- and initiating additional business opportunities valued at 125m/-.
Ms Khamis also highlighted substantial investments in trade infrastructure, including improvements in transport networks. According to Ms Khamis, efficient infrastructure is crucial for trade development.
She said the government’s initiatives have created a more conducive environment for businesses, allowing them to thrive. She further emphasised the rapid growth of e-commerce in Tanzania, accelerated by government efforts to digitise trade processes.
TANTRADE has been at the forefront of promoting digital platforms for local businesses, enabling them to reach a broader customer base.
