Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE ruling party has urged the government to make sure that only eligible and targeted households are entitled to benefit from the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) CCM Secretary General Daniel Chongolo warned leaders and other public servants retiring from work against posing themselves as targeted group to benefit from TASAF funds, saying doing so is to deprive those eligible from getting the required support.

Mr Chongolo made the directives here saying the funds should only benefit the identified vulnerable groups, who are the main targets in the communities and not pensioners.

“There is a tendency whereby leaders and public servants after retiring from work seek to get registered for TASAF funds on ground that they are also the target group,” he said.

Mr Chongolo made the directives when addressing regional government leaders and CCM members in Kagera.

He was speaking after arriving in the region for a two -day tour to inspect implementation of the ruling party’s manifesto, as well as assess the party’s strength at the grassroots level.

He also asked the leaders in the region to ensure 10 per cent interest free loans issued by the local government authorities to youth, women and people with disabilities is availed on time for the purpose of empowering the target group to build their economic development activities.

“The 10 per cent interest free loan is very vital and thus it should be availed on time to enable the target group to build their economic development activities,” he said.

Presenting a regional development report, Kagera Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Prof Faustine Kamuzora said local government authorities in Kagera have provided 60 per cent of the free loans to youth, women and people with disabilities in the region.

Meanwhile, Prof Kamuzora said lack of industries and other economic development institutions in the region, slows down the region in terms of growth and economic development.

The RAS said that the Kagera region’s per capita income increased by 10 per cent in 2018 and the region was ranked 18th among the mainland regions in percentage contribution to the national gross domestic.

He said the region’s Industrial base is still at an infant stage and thus need to initiate and implement various industries to help create economic opportunities, including creating employment in the region.
