Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), in collaboration with various stakeholders, is set to launch a special programme aimed at educating local and international tourists on the history of the slave trade while enhancing revenue from the tourism sector.
TBC’s popular Tanzania Safari Channel will debut the new television programme, “The Slave Caravan,” as part of its Tanzania Safari initiative, according to TBC’s Director General, Dr Ayub Rioba.
The programme will feature documentaries on the history of the slave trade in Tanzania, including interviews with experts, reenactments, and visits to historical sites along the slave caravan route from Zanzibar and Bagamoyo to Ujiji in Kigoma.
“The launch of the Slave Caravan programme is part of TBC’s efforts to promote tourism in Tanzania and capitalise on the country’s rich history and culture,” Dr Rioba said at a news conference in Dodoma yesterday.
The initiative follows a directive by President Samia Suluhu Hassan during the shooting of The Royal Tour documentary in September 2021, when she urged the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA) board to explore the potential of the slave caravan route as a tourist attraction.
Subsequently, TANAPA commissioned the University of Dar es Salaam’s Department of History and Archaeology to conduct research on the route.
The study, completed in November 2021, resulted in a 300-page report outlining the historical significance and current accessibility of the route for tourism.
Dr Salvatory Nyanto, a senior lecturer at UDSM, noted that the route remains intact and can be used by pedestrians, vehicles, bicycles and even marathoners.
By showcasing this significant chapter of history, TBC aims to attract more tourists, generate revenue and preserve important historical sites.
