Africa-Press – Tanzania. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has appointed former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete as the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
In a statement, the Commission said Kikwete will support the African Union’s efforts to address complex political, peace, and security dynamics across the strategically significant region.
The role places the former Tanzanian leader at the centre of diplomatic efforts in a region that remains critical to both continental and global stability, particularly due to its proximity to key international trade routes along the Red Sea.
“In this capacity, Kikwete will advance preventive diplomacy, facilitate inclusive political dialogue, and promote confidence-building among stakeholders. He will also work to strengthen regional cooperation mechanisms aimed at fostering sustainable peace and stability,” the statement said.
According to the Commission, the High Representative will work closely with regional and international partners, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, East African Community, the League of Arab States, and the United Nations.
The AU noted that such coordination is essential to ensure coherence, complementarity and effectiveness in collective efforts to promote peace, stability, and security across the Horn of Africa.
Youssouf expressed confidence in Kikwete’s ability to deliver in the role, citing his experience and leadership.
“The experience, leadership and wisdom of President Kikwete will make a significant contribution to supporting countries in the region and advancing durable peace, stability and prosperity,” he said.
Kikwete, who served as Tanzania’s president from 2005 to 2015, is widely regarded as an experienced diplomat and regional statesman, with a track record in mediation and conflict resolution across Africa.
“The Chairperson expresses his full confidence that the experience, leadership and wisdom of President Kikwete will make a significant contribution to supporting countries in the region, as well as relevant regional and international mechanisms, in addressing prevailing challenges and advancing durable peace, stability and prosperity,” the statement read.
The African Union (AU) is a continental body consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent. It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999).
The main objectives of the OAU were to rid the continent of the remaining vestiges of colonisation and apartheid; to promote unity and solidarity amongst African States; to coordinate and intensify cooperation for development; to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member States, and to promote international cooperation.
