Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA Communications Authority (TCRA) has issued a warning to online content providers who distribute unlicensed news and events in violation of the Online Content Act and Regulations of 2020 and its amendments of 2022.
A statement issued by TCRA Director General, Dr Jabiri Bakari, said that TCRA has been closely monitoring the trend of online content services and is issuing warnings to those who violate the laws and regulations of broadcasting services.
“TCRA, under the authority granted per the Communications and Postal Act, Chapter 306 and its regulations, is responsible for regulating telecommunications and Internet services, postal and radio, television, and online content broadcasting.
He added, “We will not hesitate to take strict action against all those involved in providing these services without licenses by bringing them to the attention of the law enforcement agencies.
Dr Jabiri said they would like to remind telecommunications service providers and SMS aggregators to ensure that bulk message content leading up to and after the 2025 general elections complies with the laws and regulations of the Electronic and Postal Communications Act.
He also reminded these service providers that content vetting is carried out before distributing the relevant bulk messages to ensure that no messages inciting violence, breaching the peace, or spreading false information reach users of communication services.
“All content related to the general elections obtain approval from the relevant institution or party, service providers should retain records of all messages used in bulk for the period required by law for verification if necessary,” Dr Jabiri stressed.
He also said TCRA calls on all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring that communications and content provided before, during, and after the 2025 General Elections do not undermine peace, national unity, and the authenticity of information for the Tanzanian citizens.
