Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA Forestry Agency (TFS) is set to harvest one tonne of honey in the next financial year, following the measures taken including installing more beehives within the protected areas.
TFS Geita District Council Conservation Officer, Mr Almas Mgalu, said during his visit at the Geita forest reserve tourism attractions that the Agency in the District started the beekeeping project last year with 24 beehives, where the harvest was about 50 Kilograms of honey.
“To expand the honey productivity and other bee products, TFS have put in place more 100 beehives that will be installed at three different beekeeping farms in the district,” he said,
He added: “It is our hope to expand the harvest for the next year, because we have expanded the scope of investment by setting up more beehives at different areas that are important for beekeeping,” the TFS officer insisted.
At the same time, TFS keeps on spreading education to community members to enable people introduce and cope with advanced honey harvesting.
He recommended that beekeeping be one of the suggested alternative economic activities in the District to facilitatemembers of the community to value forest conservation associated activities.
The Officer added that, so far, TFS has offered official permission to citizens to freely run beekeeping projects in TFS forest reserves in accordance with the Agency’s guidelines and management policies.
“Basically those who have applied for this opportunity, we give them permission and direct them where to place their beehives. Currently about 800 beehives are owned by citizens”.
Geita District Commissioner Wilson Shimosaid the district supports TFS ‘efforts by promoting tree planting and control deforestation, aiming to make conducive environment for the beekeeping industry.
