Africa-Press – Tanzania. JOURNALIST in Tanzania have been urged to reflect on the information they disseminate to the public and to lead constructive agendas, especially during this crucial election period, to foster free and fair elections.
The call was made by the National Coordinator of the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), Advocate Onesmo Olengurumwa, during a one-day training session organized by the coalition in Dar es Salaam.
The training brought together over 130 journalists from various regions across the country.
Speaking during the session, Advocate Olengurumwa emphasized that journalists have a critical role to play during the election period. He stressed the importance of adhering to journalistic ethics, laws, and regulations to ensure accurate and constructive reporting.
“This training aimed to build the capacity of journalists on electoral laws, their safety and security, and the importance of upholding professional ethics during elections,” Olengurumwa stated.
He also called on national leaders, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan, all political parties, and electoral institutions to recognize the need for a national dialogue to resolve existing disputes. He affirmed that THRDC is ready to facilitate such a process if all parties are willing to engage in meaningful discussions.
“I urge the President, political parties, and electoral institutions to consider the importance of national dialogue. We, as THRDC, are ready to support this initiative if all sides agree to come together. Our goal is to approach the October elections united as one nation,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Union of Journalists in Tanzania, Kenneth Sibaya, encouraged journalists to remain resilient despite the challenges they face. He urged them to work with commitment and integrity, prioritizing the public good over personal interests.
“Journalists must carry out their duties with dedication and selflessness. By doing so, their work will be seen as a blessing to society and not a curse,” said Sibaya.
Veteran journalist Deus Kibamba addressed the issue of flawed electoral systems across Africa, describing them as problematic and in need of reform. He urged journalists to investigate these systems, understand their root causes, and advocate for changes that would support free and fair elections.
The training concluded with the distribution of special jackets to journalists for identification and protection while on duty, as well as the awarding of certificates to participants who completed the training.
