Torino head coach Juric faces racial slurs in Italian Serie A match

Africa-Press – Tanzania. Torino head coach Ivan Juric on Saturday faced racist jeers in an Italian Serie A match at Spezia Calcio in Liguria, northwestern Italy. Some sections of the crowd at Spezia’s stadium reportedly shouted out racist chants calling Juric “Gypsy,” meaning Roma, the coach of the Turin team told a post-match press conference.

“(It’s the) usual insults. I tried not to react, but it’s not easy,” said Juric, 47, a former Croatia midfielder.

“The insults were directed only at me, they said ‘Gypsy’ to me. I repeat, it’s not easy when you hear yourself called Gypsy, monkey, Black.”

Last weekend Black Brazilian football player Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid faced racist insults from the stands during a Spanish La Liga match. The term “zingaro” (Roma or Gypsy) in Italian is a racial slur for people from the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Torino won the match 4-0.
