Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has declared war against traders selling counterfeit Agricultural inputs, insisting that tough legal actions will be instituted against them.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture, David Silinde raised a red flag in Parliament yesterday when responding to a main question asked by Special Seats MP, Neema Mwandabila (CCM) who wanted to know any strategy so far to control fake agro-input so as to help farmers who have been incurring unnecessary cost.
Responding, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, David Silinde warned that the government would not hesitate to institute appropriate legal actions, including revoking licences of dealers of agro-input.
According to Mr Silinde, the government was conducting routine inspections in shops and warehouses of dealers selling inputs to farmers.
He said that there were several strategies put in place by the government to control counterfeit agro-input via its agencies which include the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA).
Others, according to him, are the Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) and the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA).
Other measures include identifying and registering all dealers in the country so as to control importation of inputs that do not follow legal processes in importing their products.
Mr Silinde further said that the government had intensified massive education to farmers so that they can be able to identify fake Agricultural inputs.
