TWCC appeals for special market areas for women

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC) has asked the government to set aside special areas in each region where women traders would have open markets at least once a week to showcase and sell their products.

TWCC Chairperson Ms Mercy Sila made the request during the food standards, control and food safety training workshop which was held in Moshi, Kilimanjaro.

“The availability of such specialised markets will enable to showcase the products we produce. Those markets will publicise our products which have begun to attract more clients countrywide in recent days”, she said.

Likewise, she urged the government also to consider setting aside areas which women through TWCC could set up manufacturing premises, a move which she said would continue to raise the value of products which women produce.

“This will increase confidence to customers who are interested in buying goods produced by women compared to the current situation whereby many do manufacture and pack the products they produce at home”, Ms Mercy said.

Commenting on the two day training workshop which was conducted by TWCC in collaboration with the Trademark East Africa (TMEA), Ms Sila, said it aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs so that they could improve the products they manufacturing to compete in markets both inside and outside the country.

“Through this training, they will be educated on the importance of dimensions and quality of the products they produce so that they can attract local and foreign markets”, she said.

In order to achieve the training’s goals, TWCC had partnered with institutions that she said were responsible in one way or another for the quality of the goods produced.

The training was conducted by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), Weight and Measurement Agency (WMA), Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO), GS 1 (barcode) as well as the Government Chemist Laboratory.

Kilimanjaro’s Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Dr Seif Shekalaghe, who was a chief guest, said the regional government will continue to cooperate with TWCC in a bid to empower women entrepreneurs.

“The government recognises the contributions made by women and we in Kilimanjaro are ready to offer our cooperation including that of establishing a special market for women,” he said.

Dr Shekalaghe said the training will be a catalyst for the promoting women’s entrepreneurship not only in Kilimanjaro but also countrywide.
