UN Estimates Africa’S Economic Growth at 3.6% this Year

Africa-Press – Tanzania. The United Nations (UN) Department of Trade and Development predicts that African economies will accelerate economic growth, rising from a 2.9% expansion of GDP in 2024 to 3.6% this year.”In Africa, growth is expected to increase to 3.6% this year; the economic outlook for the three largest economies, which together account for almost half of aggregate economic output, presents mixed signs of recovery and challenges,” write analysts from the UN Trade and Development Agency, quoted by Lusa, in their report on global economic growth.

Globally, growth is expected to slow to 2.3%, compared with 2.8% in 2024. Looking only at sub-Saharan Africa, the UN predicts growth will accelerate from 4% in 2024 to 4.3% this year, but this will still be insufficient to improve the quality of life for Africans in this region, which includes most Portuguese-speaking countries.

“Overall, as the world faces cascading crises, Africa remains at the forefront of exposure and the moderate pace of economic expansion observed across the continent, with the exception of a few bright spots, remains insufficient to create enough good jobs, especially for its youth, and more generally to achieve significant progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals,” the report further points out.
