Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has assured Tanzanians that the government will ensure voters’ safety throughout the entire electoral process, including voter registration and polling day during the 2025 General Election.

Mr Majaliwa stressed that the government is committed to creating a secure and peaceful environment that enables citizens to fully participate in the democratic process.

He was speaking yesterday during the Premier’s Questions and Answers session in the House.

“As the government, we are one of the key stakeholders in this process. We are educating the public on the importance of registering and coming out to vote. At the same time, we will ensure their safety throughout the process,” he said.

He added: “We also have the responsibility of mobilizing voters to participate in the elections and choose leaders who will bring them development.”

The assurance came as a response to a question from Nkasi North MP Aida Khenani (CHADEMA), who expressed concern over the declining trend in voter turnout in past elections.

Citing statistics, Ms Khenani noted that in the 2010 General Election, only 42.7 per cent of registered voters cast their ballots.

She said the turnout increased to 65.3 per cent in 2015 but dropped again to 50.7 per cent in the 2020 election.

In response, the Premier acknowledged the challenge, reiterating that constitutionally, every citizen has the right to vote and to be elected.

He stressed that the responsibilities for managing all election processes lie in the hands of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “As the government, we are facilitators. Our duty is to implement the directives of the Commission according to their schedule, which includes voter registration and updates,” he said.

He urged all eligible citizens to participate in the electoral process, assuring them of a peaceful and orderly process.

“We will continue to support the Commission in closing any gaps that may have contributed to low voter turnout in the past. I take this opportunity to encourage all Tanzanians to turn out in large numbers to vote,” Mr Majaliwa said.

Mr Majaliwa called upon all stakeholders, government institutions, political parties, civil society, and the media to work together in building trust in the electoral system and ensuring a high voter turnout.

Preparations for the 2025 General Election are already underway.

He said INEC has already begun early planning and consultations, including reviewing voter registration procedures and logistics.

Voter education campaigns are being scaled up across regions to raise awareness about the importance of civic participation, especially among youth and the first-time voters.

In partnership with civil society organizations and development partners, the government is also working on enhancing transparency and accessibility during the electoral process.

Digital tools are being considered for voter registration and results transmission to improve efficiency and credibility.
