Africa-Press – Tanzania. VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, has urged religious leaders to strengthen moral education to the current generation in order to safeguard the nation’s future.
Speaking during an Iftar organised by the Tanzania Community for Reconciliation and Peace (JMAT) in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, Dr Nchimbi said moral upbringing remains a key pillar in shaping responsible citizens.
He said the country continues to face challenges in instilling discipline and values among the younger generation, warning that failure to address the issue could have long-term consequences.
“Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders, businesspeople, entrepreneurs and teachers. If we fail in raising them properly, we destroying the future of our nation,” he said.
Dr Nchimbi called on leaders of all faiths to support government efforts by prioritising moral teachings in their work and community engagements.
“The greatest investment we can make is to ensure our current generation grows with strong moral values, as this will determine the kind of nation we build,” he said.
He further said that many acts discouraged by religion also constitute social and criminal offences, noting that promoting ethical behaviour contributes directly to national stability. The Vice-President also commended JMAT for its role in strengthening interfaith relations and promoting peace, saying the government recognises and values its contribution.
He said that Tanzania re mains a model of religious harmony and called for continued cooperation among faith leaders to preserve unity. Dr Nchimbi further urged believers to sustain the positive practices observed during periods of repentance, such as the Holy Month of Ramadan and Lent and to continue them beyond those periods.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Relations, Ms Rahma Kisuo, said JMAT has maintained close collaboration with the government in promoting peace, unity and social cohesion.
She pledged to stakeholders that the PMO remains open and committed to continuing collaboration with various groups in the country. JMAT Chairperson Sheikh Alhad Mussa Salum said Ramadan offers a unique opportunity for reflection, self-discipline and spiritual growth, urging believers to uphold the values learned during the holy month throughout the year.
“For eleven months people may fall short and commit various mistakes, but Ramadan is a special opportunity granted by God for forgiveness and self-reflection,” he said He said the lessons of patience, compassion and righteousness should guide conduct even after Ramadan, describing the period as a foundation for building a morally upright society.
Sheikh Salum described life after Ramadan as especially important, explaining that fasting is meant to nurture God-consciousness and moral behaviour. He urged believers to carry forward the lessons learned during the holy month, treating Ramadan as a classroom whose teachings should guide their actions even after it has ended.
