Africa-Press – Tanzania. Dar es Salaam: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has called upon Tanzanians to prioritise fortifying the nation’s unity and progress.
In an address to mark the 60th Union anniversary during the celebrations held yesterday at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, President Samia stressed the importance of sustaining peace and stability, fostering development through the 4R philosophy: Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms and Rebuilding and promoting continuous personal and national growth.
President Samia expressed contentment in Tanzania’s Union, highlighting the diverse ethnicities and religious beliefs unified by the common thread of Kiswahili, the national language.
“I want to say three main things to Tanzanians. Firstly, we should be proud of our Union because this country was created by our own choices. Over the course of the last 60 years, over 120 different ethnic groups have formed the United Republic of Tanzania, each with its own unique set of religious beliefs. Thankfully, Kiswahili, our native language, unites us,” she remarked.
She underscored the nation’s achievements in maintaining peace and fostering solidarity over the past six decades.

“By upholding peace and stability, we have been able to look after and defend our nation; via the Union, we have created a sense of national cohesion and togetherness, bolstered brotherhood and achieved significant advancements in social, political and economic aspects. In addition to preserving our traditions and practices, we have every cause to be proud of our union,” she said.
President Samia emphasised the implementation of the 4R philosophy, stressing that the principles are instrumental in ensuring lasting peace and stability, thereby facilitating sustainable development.
Notably, she lauded Tanzania’s progress towards achieving a low-level middle-income economy, urging continued efforts to maintain peace as a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity.
Furthermore, President Samia urged Tanzanians to commit to continuous learning and hard work, emphasising the responsibility to safeguard human rights and nurture individual development. This call to action reflects the president’s vision of empowering citizens to contribute effectively to the nation’s progress.
The 60th anniversary celebrations commenced on April 14, with the official launch by President of Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, culminating in yesterday’s grand ceremony.
President Samia extended gratitude to the founding fathers of the Union, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, along with subsequent leaders, for their vision in uniting the nation and laying the foundation for a prosperous future.
“The only gift we can give them is to continue to maintain this Union and honour their vision,” Dr Samia said.
The event witnessed the presence of both Tanzanian and international dignitaries, including leaders from Kenya President Dr William Ruto, President of Burundi Evarist Ndayishimiye, President of the Union of Comoros Azali Assoumani, President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Felix Tshisekedi.
Others were the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Nangolo Mbumba, the President of Namibia, Vice-President of Malawi, Saulos Klaus Chilima, Vice-President of Uganda Jessica Alupo, and Akinwumi Adesina President of the African Development Bank Group.
