AfricaPress-Tanzania: TANZANIA Prisons Service (TPS) has saved at least 11bn/- on food given to prisoners for the last 11 months.

Speaking on the occasion of the Deputy Minister for Home Affairs’ visit at the new Prisons Headquarters in Msalato Dodoma Commissioner General Suleiman Mzee said the money was saved after heeding President John Magufuli’s advice.

He said Dr Magufuli had directed the department to use its resources to produce food and meet prisoners’ demand.

The TPS boss said before that they were spending 1.1bn/- every month on food suppliers, who sometimes were dishonest.

He explained that some dishonest suppliers had caused TPS to use the Prison Corporation Sole (Shima) as the sole supplier of foodstuffs and other goods to reduce the burden on the central government.

“The debt was huge because some suppliers submitted an invoice with illusory goods, for instance, they indicated that several trays of eggs were supplied, but in reality it was not true,” he expressed.

Frequently, President Magufuli called on TPS to be creative and work hard to reduce the burden on the government to feed inmates, and in March last year (2020) CGP Mzee started implementing it.

For his part, Deputy Minister Khamis Hamza Chilo admired the great strides made by TPS for successfully implementing President Magufuli’s directive.

However, the Deputy Minister praised TPS for establishing a large furniture factory in Dodoma that also embraced the President Magufuli’s dream of industrialisation.

The furniture industry will cost at least 1bn/-. “I commend you for this progress that I have witnessed for myself during this visit,” Mr Chilo said.
