AfricaPress-Tanzania: PRESIDENT Hussein Mwinyi has vowed that no stone would be left unturned in the battle against corrupt elements in the society until discipline and accountability are restored in public offices.
Addressing Chama Cha Mapinduzi leaders in Unguja South Region, Dr Mwinyi stated firmly that he will not rest until all public servants adhere to ethical conduct in the performance of their duties.
“I started, and I am determined, to continue until all public servants at all levels observe ethics, refrain from corrupt practices and are accountable to the people,” he said.
He thanked Unguja South leaders and the wananchi for voting him to the highest office on land.
He said he has been taking different measures to ensure that people are well served while corrupt leaders and embezzlers of public funds have no place to hide their faces.
Dr Mwinyi, who has shown commitment to weed out corrupt leaders and inefficient workers, warned that if corrupt government employees remain in public service, there will be no development and that under the prevailing peace and stability no efforts should be spared to weed out corrupt people.
“I have come to thank you wananchi for electing me. I would like to use this opportunity to remind you that you have a role to play in ending corruption and improving accountability in the government,” he told a cheering crowd at Makunduchi.
He said peace and political stability must be enhanced along with hard work to achieve the country’s development goals as promised during the 2020-2025 CCM Election Manifesto.
“Many people in Zanzibar were divided, surrounded with hatred, there was no socialisation and some were not even engaging in funerals,” he said, adding that a number of divorce cases had been recorded every after elections. “We need to end all these and call them history,” he noted.
According to Dr Mwinyi, the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) allows him and the people of Zanzibar in general, to focus on development programmes aimed at bringing positive changes in the country.
He said Zanzibar is currently winning support from development partners, who are providing grants and loans, and improving partnership with private sectors, and improving revenue collection.
“We are moving on and even foreign investors are eying Zanzibar. We have also started to implement huge projects such as the feasibility study for the construction of a multipurpose new sea port at Manga-Puani and Bumbwini area,” he said.
He said all his appointees should now help him implement the promises and the manifesto, while also being close to the people to listen to their problems in search for lasting solutions.
While in Makunduchi, Dr Mwinyi visited the graves of two politicians: the late Hasnu Makame Mwita, who was among the founders of Afro Shiraz Party (ASP), and the late Sheikh Idrissa Abdul Wakil, Zanzibar’s 4th Phase President.
At the meeting, the CCM Deputy Secretary General, Zanzibar, Dr Abdalla Juma Mabodi, thanked the president for sparing time to talk to wananchi. He asked the public to support President Mwinyi’s development initiatives.
