Time to Turn Pro? Cwinyaai Plays Waiting Game

Africa-Press – Uganda. Joseph Cwinya-ai has long been regarded as the crown jewel of Ugandan amateur golf. At the Absa Captain’s Bell, he reinforced that reputation by equalling the Uganda Golf Club course record with a scintillating 63—10 birdies and no dropped shots.

But to seasoned pros like Deo Akope, it’s time for Cwinya-ai to take the next step. “He’s done all he can as an amateur,” Akope says. “Now he’s just blocking the path for others. He should come and experience what it means to grind for a cheque.”

Cwinya-ai, a key member of Uganda’s national amateur team, has previously shown brilliance in continental events, including the All Africa Golf Team Championship, the Africa Region IV Golf Championship and Victoria Cup.

When contacted, Cwinya-ai paid glowing tribute to Akope. “Deo has been my mentor since I started playing competitively. He taught me how to shape shots, manage courses, and control emotions. Watching him win again is not just motivational – it’s instructional. The game is the best teacher, but having someone like him walk you through it is invaluable.”

Cwinya-ai’s transition to the paid ranks could energise Ugandan pro golf. The only thing left? The leap.
