Africa-Press – Uganda. When Esther Aganyira started playing golf after a lure from her friend Jovia Tugume almost a couple of years ago, she didn’t envisage the kind of journey ahead.
And when everything fell right in place last weekend, Aganyira was left in awe when she was crowned as the best player during the May leg of the Entebbe Club Monthly Tee.
Aganyira powered to victory with the best score of 62 nett off handicap 34 to floor a sizable field at the par-71 course.
Yet, she played it beautifully as a mode of solace. “Having just recovered from an illness, I approached the round calmly and with gratitude – treating it as a celebration of restored health,” said Aganyira.
It all blossomed finely for the administration practitioner. “My golf journey has been nothing short of enjoyable, as I’m still learning the finer details of the game,” she remarked.
“Golf is unpredictable; no two rounds are ever the same. Initially, I played without much structure, but in March this year, I adopted the ‘every stroke counts’ principle.
“I began targeting scores slightly better than my allowance – like aiming for six shots instead of seven on a hole where I’m expected to double bogey. I used that same approach last Saturday,” she added.
And indeed, Aganyira converted a number of double-bogeys into bogeys which inevitably saved the day. She made bogeys on Holes par-3 No.2, par-4 No.5, par-3 No.6, par-4 No.13 and par-14.
Aganyira smiled to pars on the par-3 Holes No.8, No.10 and No.16, capping a memorable round.
