Buganda Youth Minister Urges Self-Reliance over Exploitation

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Buganda Kingdom’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Talent, Robert Serwanga, has called on young people to reject political exploitation and instead focus on self-reliance through practical, community-driven projects.

Delivering the minister’s message on his behalf, Ssalongo Ssenyonjo Abby, Chairperson of the Ssingo County Elders’ Council, made the appeal during the launch of the Kezimbira Association’s Ssingo County branch at Mituba Kumi Nagumu Gombolola—an administrative hub for eleven Buganda clans.

“You, the youth, are the engine of Buganda’s future. Avoid being manipulated for short-term gain. Focus on building your own future through hard work and creativity,” the message read.

The event brought together local leaders, clan representatives, and dignitaries, and included the introduction of a new Kezimbira leadership team.

While the official swearing-in is pending, the committee will include a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and publicity officer.

In his written remarks, Serwanga praised the youth-led initiative, calling it a crucial step toward economic independence.

“The creation of this branch is a step toward self-reliance. Let it become a hub for innovation, discipline, and productivity,” he said.

Representing the County Chief (Mukwenda), Third Deputy Moses Tusubira Nnyombi encouraged the youth to embrace agriculture and animal husbandry as viable pathways to financial stability.

He also revealed plans by the county to launch vocational and technical training opportunities.

“We are preparing a range of skills training programs. These will not only give you practical experience but also help ensure long-term sustainability,” Tusubira said.

Andrew Ssekabiito, chairperson of the Kezimbira Association, said the group was founded on principles of personal development, hard work, and strong family values. He stressed the need for mindset change among young people to unlock their full potential.

“We believe development starts with the right mindset. That’s why we focus on practical skills and values,” he said.

Newly appointed youth leaders vowed to start income-generating projects and savings cooperatives (SACCOs) in their communities.

They also appealed for support from the Kingdom, development partners, and other well-wishers.

The Kezimbira Ssingo branch is expected to serve as a model for youth-led transformation, with plans underway for training workshops, community outreach, and enterprise development across the region.
