Africa-Press – Uganda. Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa has called on Uganda’s leaders to demonstrate more passion for sports and provide a fixed budget allocation, warning that the sector will continue to rely on ad hoc interventions without predictable funding.
Speaking as chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, Basalirwa criticised top decision-makers for failing to appreciate the value of sports.
He argued that a dedicated sports budget would guarantee athletes consistent rewards for winning medals or representing Uganda, removing reliance on irregular presidential pledges.
“If we decide as a country to apportion a percentage of our national budget to the sports sector, those things will just flow naturally,” Basalirwa said, contrasting Uganda’s approach with Kenya, where President William Ruto recently pledged KSh2.5 million (about Shs70 million) to the national football team for a win against Zambia.
Basalirwa praised the electorate for choosing more sports-minded legislators, which helped pass the Sports Amendment Bill, co-sponsored by himself and Fufa president Moses Magogo.
He urged Parliament to prioritise structured financing for sports, cautioning that without it, Uganda will struggle to nurture talent and compete on the international stage.
