Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda Breweries Limited, through its flagship Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker, has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open Championship, which will take place for the first time at the prestigious Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club.
The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Portbell, Luzira, attended by sponsors, Uganda Golf Union officials, media, and partners.
Johnnie Walker has committed a sponsorship and execution package of Shs650 million for this year’s tournament—a Shs100 million increase from last year’s Shs550 million, marking the brand’s largest investment in the Open since becoming title sponsors.
The 2025 championship will begin with the Seniors Open from August 22-23, followed by the Ladies Open from August 28-30.
The Amateur Open will run from September 3-6, culminating in the Professional Open from September 9-13.
Speaking at the launch, Johnnie Walker Uganda Brand Manager Christine Kyokunda reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to promoting golf and delivering a world-class tournament experience.
“As Johnnie Walker, we are proud to continue walking alongside the Uganda Golf Union to elevate this tournament to new heights,” Kyokunda said.
“Moving the Open to Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club reflects our commitment to pushing boundaries, just like the players who take to the course each year.”
Uganda Breweries Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo emphasized that the Open is not just a golf tournament, but a lifestyle and sporting experience.
He highlighted the brand’s signature Hospitality Village, promising a vibrant mix of entertainment, immersive whisky experiences, and premium hospitality for players and fans alike.
“We’re not just sponsoring a golf tournament; we’re curating an experience. From bold serves to immersive whisky lounges, this year’s edition promises a celebration of progress, community, and excellence,” Kilonzo added.
Uganda Golf Union President Jackson Were praised Johnnie Walker’s continued investment, noting that the move to Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club introduces a fresh playing experience and aligns with the Union’s goal of growing golf across Uganda.
“The Uganda Open is the biggest tournament on our calendar, and Johnnie Walker has been instrumental in elevating its profile. We are grateful to all our sponsors and partners for making this year’s Open possible,” Dr. Were said.
Preparations at Lugazi are already underway, with the golf course being readied to host top local and regional talent.
The tournament is expected to attract leading golfers from East, Southern, and West Africa, as well as Europe and beyond.
The Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open has evolved beyond golf, becoming a celebration of culture, lifestyle, and entertainment.
This year’s event is supported by key partners, including Absa Bank Uganda, Aquafina, Isuzu Mac East Africa, Uganda Tourism Board, Medisell Uganda, NBS Sports, and MTN MOMO.
Absa Bank Uganda, a seven-time sponsor of the Open, will offer an all-expenses-paid trip to the next Magical Kenya Open for the top 10 golfers in the Pro-Am leg.
“We anticipate a great turnout and look forward to witnessing inspiring stories unfold on and off the greens,” said Judith Bulamu, Absa’s Head of Global Corporates.
Aquafina, the official hydration partner, will ensure players stay refreshed throughout the tournament.
“Staying hydrated is key to great performance, and we’ll be keeping every golfer refreshed on the course,” said Brand Manager Grace Namutebi.
Uganda Tourism Board CEO Juliana Kaggwa highlighted that taking the Open to new hubs offers golfers a chance to explore Uganda, with options to start or end the championship with a tour of Eastern Uganda.
Registration for the tournament is now open via the Uganda Golf Union website: www.golf-uganda.com.
