Gen Matsiko Urges UPDF School Leaders to Uphold Values

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Joint Staff – Political Commissariat of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj Gen Henry Matsiko, has called on administrators and teachers in UPDF education institutions to prioritise patriotism, discipline, and moral integrity as they shape learners into responsible citizens dedicated to national development.

Matsiko made the remarks while addressing head teachers, head instructors, and principals from UPDF-managed schools during a meeting held on Wednesday at the Land Force Headquarters in Bombo.

He emphasised that education within the UPDF system plays a pivotal role in promoting national values and strengthening the Force’s welfare structure.

“When formal education, culture, and sports function effectively, our troops and their families have high morale, and the nation benefits from responsible and value-driven citizens,” Matsiko said.

“UPDF schools must go beyond academics. They should cultivate loyalty, service, and sacrifice while instilling discipline and patriotism in learners.”

The General commended the educators for their continued dedication and resilience, noting that their unwavering service embodies the selfless spirit of the UPDF. He also encouraged teachers to serve as role models of integrity and devotion, saying that their example would naturally inspire learners to grow into patriotic and responsible citizens.

During the same meeting, the Joint Staff – Formal Education, Sports, and Culture, Brig Gen Richard Karemire, lauded the educators for their patriotism and commitment, particularly during times when public sector teachers were on strike.

“We commend you for your dedication and patriotism because you continued teaching when others were on strike,” Karemire said.

He further announced that Shs 500 million had been allocated for renovations in UPDF schools with dilapidated infrastructure and encouraged administrators to channel their concerns through proper procedures. He also urged them to make use of UPDF engineering projects often carried out during Tarehe Sita celebrations to enhance school facilities.

Currently, the UPDF manages 52 formal education institutions across the country, including 37 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, four tertiary institutions, two polytechnic schools, one technical institute, and one Defence Forces Institute of Health Services.

These institutions serve both the children of service members and civilians from neighbouring communities — reflecting the UPDF’s broader contribution to national education and community welfare.

The meeting was attended by senior officers from the Directorate of Education, Sports, and Culture, as well as other UPDF departments, including Col Bob Ngabirano, senior and junior officers, among others.
