Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially launched a one-year Russian language training program at the School of Defence Intelligence and Security in Migyera, Nakasongola District.
The initiative aims to bolster military cooperation and deepen diplomatic ties between Uganda and the Russian Federation.
The course, inaugurated by Joint Staff Training and Doctrine Command, Brigadier General Wycliffe Keita, brings together officers and militants from various UPDF formations.
Keita emphasised that the program marks a significant milestone in strengthening Uganda’s defence partnerships and enhancing regional and international collaboration.
“This initiative will not only strengthen the bond between the UPDF and the Russian Federation but also contribute to Uganda’s broader international relations and regional development,” Keita said.
The launch ceremony was graced by Major General Sergel Marchuk, Head of Russian Military Experts in Uganda, who commended the UPDF for its steadfast commitment to professional development. He revealed that successful graduates of the course would be eligible for admission to Russian military academies, benefiting from a shortened study period due to their prior training.
The Commandant of the School of Defence Intelligence and Security Col James Muhumuza expressed gratitude Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF President Museveni, and Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for their continuous support in advancing military education and training.
“This program will equip our soldiers with essential communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and translating Russian, which will be invaluable in international missions and future military collaborations,” Muhumuza said.
The event was attended by senior and junior UPDF officers, Russian and Chinese military instructors, and language experts who underscored the importance of linguistic and cultural competence in global defence cooperation.
The launch of this language program marks another step in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to enhance professional military education and foster strong bilateral relations with global partners.
