Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has donated more than 4,050 tablets and computers to cultural institutions and key national bodies to support statistical activities, data management and research.
The beneficiaries include Umukuka wa Bugisu, Rwenzururu Kingdom, Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, the Economic Policy Research Centre, the National Planning Authority and the Presidential CEO Forum.
According to UBOS, the devices were previously used during the national census and remain in good working condition. The move follows an earlier distribution in July 2025, when UBOS donated 120,000 tablets to public universities and other institutions of higher learning to keep census systems updated and support data-related activities.
UBOS Executive Director Chris Mukiza said the latest distribution is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s statistical ecosystem and promote evidence-based planning.
“The distribution is more than a donation but a component of the broader goal to make statistics usable and accessible to all stakeholders including cultural institutions, academic institutions and training facilities,” Mukiza said.
He explained that the tablets and computers will enhance the capacity of institutions to collect, analyze and disseminate data within their jurisdictions.
“We shall be able to gather and tabulate, correct and analyze information. The tablets and computers were used in the last census and are in good condition and they can be used until they become obsolete,” Dr. Mukiza said.
He added that the release of the devices is intended to deepen collaboration between UBOS and institutions that play a key role in community mobilization and policy advocacy.
“The release of the tablets is a continuation of our efforts to build a strong statistical ecosystem in the country and these tablets and computers will help collect data within their jurisdiction,” he said.
Mukiza emphasized that the devices should primarily be used for statutory and administrative data collection, analysis, dissemination and policy decision-making.
Of the distributed devices, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda received 3,500 tablets and three computers.
Umukuka wa Bugisu received 250 tablets, while Rwenzururu Kingdom received 150 tablets. The National Planning Authority and the Presidential CEO Forum each received 50 tablets.
UBOS said the strategy of distributing census equipment to institutions is aimed at addressing persistent data gaps and ensuring the country remains informed through reliable statistics. By equipping cultural and religious institutions, which often have extensive grassroots networks, the bureau hopes to strengthen data collection at community level and enhance national planning processes.
The initiative aligns with UBOS’s mandate to coordinate, monitor and supervise the national statistical system and to promote the production of quality, timely and accessible official statistics.
