Africa-Press – Uganda. Local government internal auditors from across the greater Masaka region have convened in Masaka City to address challenges affecting their work and explore strategies to improve their welfare.
The auditors, who subscribe to the Local Government Internal Auditors Association, met at Solo Hites Hotel in Masaka City, where they also officially launched their Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (Sacco).
While officiating at the event, State Minister for Microfinance Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo commended the auditors for their critical role in monitoring public funds meant for service delivery, including government programmes such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Kasolo emphasized that increased support to internal auditors would significantly reduce corruption in government institutions, noting that they play a central role in promoting accountability and transparency in the use of public resources.
He also urged the auditors to embrace personal development initiatives through income-generating activities, particularly by participating in government poverty alleviation programmes. The minister advised them to plan for life after public service to avoid financial hardship in retirement.
Masaka City Town Clerk Daniel Christopher Kaweesa called on auditors to strengthen working relationships with other government staff, encouraging them to promote teamwork rather than being viewed solely as enforcers of regulations.
He noted that cooperation is essential for effective service delivery.
The President of the association, Justus Musimenta, highlighted key challenges facing internal auditors, including lack of transport to facilitate field monitoring and limited access to continuous professional training, particularly in response to evolving government systems.
Leaders of the newly formed Sacco said the initiative is intended to promote financial discipline and economic empowerment among members, while reducing susceptibility to corruption.
The Sacco was officially launched by Kasolo, who pledged government support towards its growth and sustainability.
