Africa-Press – Uganda. Around March 2020, Emmanuel Rackara, 26, a son of Rosemary Okullu, a retired teacher found out he had a fifth stage kidney failure on the fourth trip to Kampala Hospital.
What he thought as a stomach ache had turned out to be something worse. He was given medication but went back two days later when the condition got worse.
“Since we were going through a moment of the loss of our father, we thought it was stress and he had not gotten over his death,” Moses Okot, Rackara’s elder brother and donor said.
Changing the scenery did not help the situation. Going back to the hospital, they realised he had kidney failure though the stage was not known yet. He was given steroids but in vain.
His fourth time at the hospital, he was admitted for two weeks. He was diagnosed with stage five kidney failure. Both of the kidneys had failed which the doctor said was caused by a bacterial infection.
Since Kampala hospital did not have the necessary equipment, they were referred to St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya. From there, he started dialysis under the care of Dr Joseph Ogavu Gyagenda, a nephrologist at the hospital.
Rackara would commute three times a week for dialysis treatment costing Shs1,300,000 weekly. This was later reduced to once a week due to accumulative costs.
Rackara’s elder brother, Moses Okot turned out to be the perfect match for his kidney donation.
Having exhausted all ends in paying for dialysis, the family of Emanuel Rackara needs USD30, 400 (Shs112m) for the kidney transplant procedure at Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai, India in March 2021.
However, the family is unable to meet all the costs. For that matter, they have started fundrising drives to raise the money to save Rackara.
There is going to be the Save Emma charity car wash event on February 20, 2021, at Splash & Dash in Kabalagala, starting from 9 am. There will be car washing, fun games, auctioning, haircuts, performance, food, and drinks plus music.
