Africa-PressUganda. INFRASTRUCTUREPresident Yoweri Museveni officiated at the commissioning ceremony for the completed Isimba Public Bridge Project on Thursday. They are in fact two bridges connected by Koova Island along the Victoria Nile connecting the two districts of Kayunga and Kamuli.Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) said that after successful load testing and commissioning, the bridge is open to traffic between Uganda’s capital Kampala, Kayunga and Kamuli to the far east of the country.”It is a great opportunity for the people of Kayunga and Kamuli districts who can now connect from one end to another,” said the President.Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, who is the Woman MP for Kamuli district, attended the Thursday ceremony.Take a look at images of the bridge:______________________________The bridge is seen as a major development in the transport needs of the people of the areas it connects “offering a reliable and efficient connection to the rest of the Uganda”, UNRA said.

It is approximatey 500 metres downstream of the Isimba Hydropower plant, with a total length of 890 metres and deck width of 11.5 metres wide, according to the national roads body.

In July 2019, UNRA signed a memorandum of understanding with the energy ministry and the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) to supervise construction works of the bridge.

The bridge is part of the 183MW Isimba Hydro Power Plant & Isimba-Bujagali Interconnection Project.

The bridge, seen here lit during night time, is designed with two wide traffic lanes measuring 3.75 metres wide and two pedestrian walkways measuring 11.5 metres wide.

According to UNRA executive director Dr. Allen Kagina, the bridge is lit in the night to “improve traffic and pedestrian safety”.

China International Water and Electric Corporation, which constructed the 183MW Isimba Dam, handled this project.
