Abel Chebet Eyes Hat-Trick at 2025 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon

Africa-Press – Uganda. Two-time champion Abel Chebet is targeting a third consecutive win in the 21km race at the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, set for August 23, 2025, in Kasese.

Chebet, who runs for Uganda Police Athletics Club, has dominated the half marathon event since 2023 and now seeks to cement his legacy with a hat-trick.

Hailing from Bukwo in the Sebei region, Chebet is part of a growing pool of elite runners shaped by the high-altitude terrain and disciplined training.

Alongside fellow athletes, he trains daily, pushing his limits in preparation for the country’s premier road race—now in its fourth edition and the only World Athletics certified race in Uganda.

The 32-year-old has had an impressive 2025 season so far, clinching victories at the Gulu Marathon (January), Mbarara City Marathon (March), and the Coffee Marathon in Ntungamo (May), plus a second-place finish at the national cross-country championships in Tororo (February).

“I’m focused and ready for the challenge,” said Chebet. “Winning the 21km race three times in a row would mean a lot to me and give me the confidence to take on the full marathon next year.”

Inspired by local legends like Moses Kipsiro and Stephen Kiprotich, Chebet credits his roots for shaping his ambition.

“I draw my strength from training in Bukwo and from the great runners in my community. The athletic spirit of the Sebei region pushes me every day to work harder and aim higher.”

Despite limited local races, Chebet sees the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon as a vital springboard for national and international exposure.

“This race put me on the map. It gave me a platform to prove myself. Now I want to try the full marathon and see how far I can go,” he added.

Denise Paula Nazzinda, Brand Manager for Tusker Lite at Uganda Breweries Limited, says Chebet’s journey embodies the brand’s spirit of celebrating individuals who boldly push boundaries.

“Chebet’s pursuit of a hat-trick reflects Tusker Lite’s ethos,” she said. “Since receiving global certification last year, the marathon has inspired athletes to dream bigger and compete at higher levels.”

The 2025 edition promises to be the biggest yet—with nearly 6,000 runners from over 50 countries, enhanced international engagement, sustainable race practices, and a boost to local tourism and economic development.
