Among Woos Busoga Delegates in Bid for NRM CEC vice Chair

Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has appealed to NRM delegates in Busoga to back her bid for a seat on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), vowing to use the platform to fight poverty and uplift communities across the region.

Among, who is seeking to become the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson, spent Monday campaigning across Busoga, meeting delegates in Bugiri and Iganga districts.

She was accompanied by Capt. Mike Mukula, the incumbent NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, who is also seeking re-election.

The duo was warmly received by party supporters, with chants, cheers and traditional ululations marking their arrival in both districts.

Addressing delegates in Bugiri District—drawn from Bugiri, Mayuge, Namayingo, and Namutumba—Among said her ambition was rooted in a desire to address socio-economic challenges in Busoga, not personal gain.

“We should be united. Nobody should intimidate you. I am here for the good of Busoga. We shall fight poverty together,” she said.

Among pledged to use her influence and networks to deliver development, announcing plans to open a branch of her Bukedea Comprehensive School in Busoga as part of her wider education strategy.

Mukula echoed her message, urging delegates to vote for experienced leaders who could support President Museveni’s ongoing reforms.

“NRM is undergoing a foundational transformation. The President needs strong leaders. Don’t send him novices,” he said.

NRM leaders in attendance voiced strong support for Among’s bid, praising her for recognising Busoga’s unique challenges and demonstrating a tangible commitment to the region.

Later in Iganga, Among met delegates from Iganga, Kaliro, Bugweri, Jinja, and Luuka districts.

There, she outlined some of the achievements under her leadership as Speaker, including the passage of the Sugar Amendment Bill, which she said would streamline the sugar industry—a key economic sector for Busoga.

She also announced that Busoga University will reopen as a public institution in August this year, calling it a “historic milestone” for the sub-region.

“Busoga has been yearning for a public university. I am happy to report that Busoga University shall officially reopen in August,” she told the delegates.

Among was flanked by a group of MPs from the region, including Solomon Silwanyi (Bukhooli Central), Baka Mugabi (Bukhooli South), Milton Muwuma (Kigulu South), Kauma Saida Alibawo (Iganga Woman MP), Iddi Isabirye (Bunya South), and Sanon Bwire (Bulamogi County), who all pledged their support.

Her campaign in Busoga is a strategic move in the build-up to the NRM’s internal elections, where regional support is key.

With Busoga often regarded as a swing region in national politics, securing its backing could be critical for Among’s CEC ambitions.
