Archbishop Ssemogerere Urges Leaders to Build Legacies

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Archbishop of the Kampala Archdiocese, Paul Ssemogerere, has called on leaders across institutions and all citizens to strive to leave behind a positive and lasting legacy in their respective fields of service.

He emphasized that meaningful contributions to society not only define one’s leadership but also inspire future generations.

Archbishop Ssemogerere made the remarks during a memorial lecture held in honor of the late Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka, who led the Archdiocese of Kampala from 1960 to 1966.

The event, which marked 60 years since Archbishop Kiwanuka’s passing, drew religious leaders from the Kampala Archdiocese, the leadership of Lubaga Cathedral, political leaders, members of the legal fraternity, cultural leaders, and members of the public. The lecture was held at Pope Paul Hotel in Kampala under the theme: “Justice in the Uganda Society.”

In his address, Archbishop Ssemogerere urged Christians and all Ugandans to emulate Archbishop Kiwanuka’s exemplary service, particularly his courage in defending justice and institutional independence during a critical period in the country’s history.

The keynote speaker, Sr. Dr. Frances Ambrosia Nakiwala, highlighted Archbishop Kiwanuka’s lasting contributions during his six years of leadership at Lubaga Cathedral. She referenced his 1961 pastoral letter, written as Uganda approached independence, in which he cautioned the central government against interfering in Church affairs. In that letter, he emphasized the importance of justice, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

Another speaker, Fabian Kassi, noted that Archbishop Kiwanuka’s legacy continues to inspire both Christians and Ugandans because of his selfless service and unwavering commitment to moral leadership.

The commemoration served as a reflection on six decades since the death of Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka Nakabaale, with participants paying tribute to his remarkable life, principled leadership, and enduring influence on both the Church and the nation.
