Buganda Kingdom Urges Diaspora to Uphold Marriage Values

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Kingdom of Buganda has called on Baganda living abroad to conduct their marriages in accordance with Buganda customs and traditions, warning against blindly adopting Western practices that have contributed to the breakdown of many unions.

The message was delivered by Joseph Kawuki, Minister of Local Government, Kabaka’s Tours, and Diaspora Affairs, who represented the Katikkiro of Buganda during a church service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, where Mark Kaddu Ssengooba and Tracy Lynnet Naggayi were united in holy matrimony.

Kawuki commended the couple for choosing to formalize their marriage in Uganda, despite living in societies where he described marital trends as “confusing and permissive.” He praised them for returning home to celebrate their union on ancestral land, highlighting their pride in Baganda identity and respect for Buganda’s cultural norms and values.

He further lauded Joel Ssengooba, the groom’s father and a representative of the Kabaka within the Embogo (Buffalo) Clan in Stockholm, for raising his children to value their culture. Kawuki encouraged the newlyweds to preserve and pass on these traditions to their children and communities.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, who officiated the service, advised the couple not to allow money to divide their marriage.

He urged the bride, Lynnet, to stand by her husband through all circumstances, including financial challenges.

Kazimba emphasized that marriage requires wisdom and commitment, noting that many today enter marriage unprepared and later abandon it due to the challenges it presents. He encouraged the couple to handle their union with maturity and faith to ensure it endures.

The thanksgiving service was attended by several county chiefs and dignitaries, including Nelson Mugenyi, the Buganda Kingdom’s representative to Sweden; Sam Ssekajjugo of Rhinelands; Kaggo Hajj. Ahmed Matovu Magandaazi; Katambala Hajj. Sulaiman Magala; and other invited guests.

The Kingdom reiterated its appeal to Baganda everywhere to preserve and promote their cultural heritage, particularly in marriage, as a foundation for stable families and a strong society.
