Bugembe Cathedral: The history behind the walls where Kyabazinga wedding will happen for the 1st time

Africa-Press – Uganda. The forthcoming Royal Wedding of Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV and Inhebantu Jovia Mutesi shall be held at Christ’s Cathedral Bugembe, in Jinja where the Arch Bishop of the Province of Uganda Dr Kazimba Mugalu is expected to officiate as the main celebrant.

Records indicate that this shall be the first of its kind in the history of the 51-year-old, 1000-seater Cathedral.

About 5 km on the busy Jinja-Iganga Highway in Bugembe Trading Centre at Katwe Village stands Christ Cathedral Bugembe.

The magnificent Church which also serves as the headquarters of Busoga Diocese was curved out of Namirembe Diocese on 13th August 1972.

The state-of-the-art Cathedral sitting on 50 acres of land stands tall on a hill overlooking the Bugembe trading Centre.

To help us trace the history of this cathedral are the Bishop of Busoga Diocese Rt Rev Paul Naimanye and Rev. Dr Joy Mukisa the sub-dean of Christ’s Cathedral Bugembe.

Though there is no definite written literature about this Cathedral, available data reveals that the idea to construct the Cathedral was conceived by the First African Archdeacon of Busoga Archdeaconry the Late Rev. Canon John Waibale in 1952, during his stay in Great Britain during his study, but the construction work did not start until 1969 and completed in 1972.

According to Rev Dr Joy Mukisa, the architectural design was made by English Engineers in collaboration with some Ugandan Engineers.

Since its inception, the Cathedral has been under the stewardship of three Bishops.

The First Bishop of the Busoga Diocese was the Late Rt. Rev. Dr Cyprian Bamwoze who was consecrated in 1972 was at its helm up to 1999 when he retired.

This is the Holy place which the Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV chose to host the Royal Wedding as he tied the knot with the Queen to be Jovia Mutesi on 18th November 2023.

With the day first approaching, there is already excitement among the clergy and the Christians who congregate at this Cathedral since it is the first of its kind in the History of Busoga.

Preparations are in high gear to ensure the ceremony goes on well and comes with the pomp and glamour expected of such a high-profile event.

The management of Bugembe has revealed that since the Kyabazinga Royal wedding shall be attended by a number of dignitaries including the head of State, the event shall be held outside the Church in a bid to observe COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures.
