Africa-Press – Uganda. The Bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jacob Ateirweho, has called on political leaders to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid divisive rhetoric as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.
Speaking during a pastoral visit to Kagadi Secondary School, Bishop Ateirweho urged politicians vying for various positions to eschew violence, sectarianism, and hate speech, and instead promote reconciliation and unity among Ugandans.
“There is no need to fuel hatred and division. Reconcile with your opponents and remember that earthly leadership is temporary — we are all answerable to a heavenly kingdom,” he said.
The bishop made the remarks while blessing Senior Four candidates ahead of their final examinations and confirming over 500 students into the Anglican Church.
He also used the occasion to speak out against social vices affecting the community, including adultery and drug abuse, which he described as morally destructive and socially harmful.
“Adultery is evil and can break families. Drugs are dangerous, especially to our youth. These behaviors are pulling our community backwards,” Bishop Ateirweho warned.
During the event, Ramadan Nyondo Barongo, the head teacher of Kagadi Secondary School, appealed to political leaders to advocate for more government support for the institution, which he described as the largest public school in the district but still grappling with challenges.
“We are grateful for the Bishop’s visit and his spiritual guidance. But we also need our leaders to lobby for improved infrastructure, staffing, and better-equipped laboratories,” Nyondo said.
The school, which serves a large student population, continues to face resource and staffing shortages, limiting its capacity to deliver quality education.
The Bishop’s pastoral mission is part of his ongoing effort to promote peace, morality, and education across the Bunyoro region.
