Butaleja NRM Prepares for District Chairperson Re-Election

Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Butaleja District is set to hold a re-election tomorrow, today, to select a new district chairperson flag bearer following the death of Joseph Muyonjo, who was buried last Sunday.

NRM Registrar for Butaleja District, Khuzaima Hasahya, told that the election will involve only members of the district conference, totaling 250 delegates.

The district conference comprises Members of Parliament flag bearers, district councilor flag bearers, all sub-county (LCIII) flag bearers, members of the NRM-leaning District Executive Committee, and representatives of special interest groups, including the elderly, youth, and entrepreneurs.

Voting will be conducted by lining up at the Health Boardroom gardens, starting at 8am, Khuzaima said. Candidates will be nominated at the venue, with the winner subsequently endorsed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to represent the NRM in the upcoming district elections.

He added that incumbent MPs Yusuf Mutembuli, Florence Andiru Nebanda, and Geoffrey Eric Mutiwa, along with LCV Chairperson Michael Higenyi Bore, will not participate as they violated party rules by contesting as independents in the general elections.

Six candidates have expressed interest in the position so far, according to party officials. NRM District Administrative Secretary Muhammed Ali Hafunjo cautioned aspirants against bringing hooligans to the election venue or holding processions, urging all participants to maintain discipline throughout the exercise.

The re-election comes after the untimely death of Joseph Muyonjo, who had recently been elected as the NRM flag bearer but passed away following a prolonged illness.
