Africa-Press – Uganda. In a move aimed at enhancing electoral service delivery in Uganda’s West Nile sub-region, the Electoral Commission has inaugurated its new regional offices and a storage facility in Arua City.
The facility is set to serve 12 districts along with Arua City, decentralising election management and easing access to voter services.
Electoral Commission chairperson Simon Byabakama officiated the launch, stressing the facility’s dual purpose as both an administrative hub and a secure store for electoral materials.
He said it marks a critical step towards improving the credibility, efficiency, and transparency of elections in the region.
“The new regional office will not only serve as an administrative centre but also as a secure store for electoral materials, ensuring greater efficiency and transparency in election management,” said Justice Byabakama.
Amid preparations for upcoming electoral activities, he called on political actors and the general public to preserve peace and national unity.
“We are all stakeholders in this country,” he said.
“We must not allow anyone to disrupt the peace we have worked so hard to build. As the Electoral Commission, we pledge to work diligently to ensure that our activities promote peace, security, and unity among Ugandans.”
The ceremony drew a cross-section of local leaders, MPs from the West Nile sub-region, civil society actors, and political party representatives.
Their speeches underscored wide support for the Commission’s efforts to decentralise operations.
Arua City Mayor Sam Nyakua welcomed the development, saying it would ease the logistical hurdles that have long affected election coordination in the region.
Resident City Commissioner Komakech Salim also praised the facility, calling it a significant investment in electoral integrity and public confidence.
The new offices are expected to streamline election preparations, safeguard materials, and generally improve service delivery across the sub-region.
The Electoral Commission hopes the closer proximity of services will boost civic participation and ensure more orderly electoral events going forward.
