Elected NRM Leaders in Mubende Plan to Weaken NUP Support

Africa-Press – Uganda. Newly elected National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Mubende Municipality have vowed to reclaim the political ground from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), pledging to mobilize grassroots support ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Joshua Ssekate, re-elected as NRM chairperson for Mubende Municipality, said internal divisions had previously weakened the party’s presence, giving space for NUP to gain traction.

“We have been lacking voices that speak for the NRM’s achievements in our area, but now that we have new leadership, we hope to work hard to inform the public about what the government has done for us,” said Ssekate.

He added that previous misunderstandings among NRM leaders had eroded confidence but promised a renewed effort to raise support to “about eighty percent.”

Jozana Lubega, newly elected NRM chairperson for East Division—an area widely seen as a NUP stronghold—pledged to lead efforts to convert opposition supporters.

“It is true East Division is a stronghold for NUP, but I am going to do what is necessary to ensure that NUP supporters join NRM. By 2026, everything will have changed,” Lubega said, promising to build a robust campaign network.

Sylvia Nasaazi, the South Division NRM chairperson, emphasized grassroots outreach as the key strategy.

“The only way to do this is by reaching out to villages, because many youths have been left behind, and that’s why they turned to NUP,” she said.

Municipality Speaker and NRM Vice Chairperson Tadeo Sunday revealed he would lead the party’s renewed campaign in the area.

“Last time I was the team leader and NRM performed well. I’ve been reappointed to lead again, and I can assure you we are going to dominate the municipality,” Sunday stated.

NUP Leaders Fire Back

NUP leaders in Mubende have dismissed the NRM’s assertions, calling them baseless and out of touch with public sentiment.

Pafuladito Kyeyune, NUP chairperson for Mubende District, said NRM leaders were “dreaming.”

“Their statements are laughable. NUP has the majority, and our people are not willing to convert to NRM because of the pain it has caused them,” Kyeyune said.

“I assure you, NUP has quality leaders who are ready to win every position in Mubende.”

He predicted a 75% win for NUP in the upcoming elections.

Samuel Kassajja, the NUP district secretary, cautioned against equating internal party structure wins with actual public support.

“Let them not think that those party structures are final. We are waiting to show them just how strategic we are in the upcoming elections,” he said.

In the 2021 general elections, NUP made significant inroads in Mubende, emerging as a formidable opposition force in the district.
