Africa-Press – Uganda. Mbarara City South Member of Parliament Mwine Mpaka has been elected unopposed as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman for Mbarara City South Division, following a peaceful and well-attended electoral process.
The election took place at Ruti polling station, where crowds had gathered by 10 a.m. to witness the nomination and voting process. Mpaka arrived to sign his nomination forms for the chairmanship, drawing considerable support from party members and local leaders.
By midday, voting was underway, beginning with positions such as Secretary for Women Affairs, Publicity Secretary, and Vice Chairperson. While most positions were filled through consensus, the role of Publicity Secretary sparked contention, requiring direct intervention from Mpaka. However, the disagreement remained unresolved and went to the ballot.
Shortly afterward, the registrar declared Mpaka unopposed for the position of Division Chairman. He will be deputized by Bruce Mushabe, with Boas Rutaremwa serving as General Secretary.
Speaking after his election, Mpaka expressed gratitude for the calm and orderly process.
“I want to thank the people of Mbarara City South for turning up and electing me unopposed. I also commend those who contested for other positions — we had no quarrels, and most of the roles were filled through harmonization,” Mpaka said.
He emphasized that the new executive’s primary focus would be on intensifying efforts to disseminate the NRM manifesto across the division ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“Our task is to ensure the achievements of the NRM government are communicated clearly to the people and that we secure a sweeping victory for the party,” he added.
While some critics raised concerns that Mpaka’s position as MP may have influenced the electoral process, he dismissed the claims.
“We reached consensus on most positions. Where consensus failed, we went to the vote. This was a democratic and consultative process,” Mpaka clarified.
With the new leadership in place, Mpaka reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the NRM’s grassroots structures and ensuring that the party retains dominance in the forthcoming elections.
