Emergence of PFF Shakes FDC Stronghold of Kasese

Africa-Press – Uganda. The long-standing dominance of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Kasese District is facing a critical challenge following the emergence of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), a breakaway faction formed by former FDC loyalists.

The new development has injected fresh political energy and uncertainty in the region, with rival political forces particularly the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) viewing the split as a golden opportunity to erode FDC’s traditional support base.

Both the NRM and NUP believe that the split will divide opposition votes, enhancing their own prospects in the upcoming elections.

“This internal split is going to fracture the opposition vote and, frankly, the politics of Kasese now remains between us [NUP] and the NRM,” Basisa said.

“What we’re witnessing is a reconfiguration of opposition politics. The fragmentation gives us [NRM] an opportunity to consolidate and even expand our presence in areas where we previously struggled,” NRM’s Kamalha revealed.

Despite the defections, FDC leaders are putting up a brave face.

Ronald Kabuku, the party chairperson in Kasese, remains adamant that the FDC still commands majority support and can weather the storm.

“We’ve faced many challenges before and have come out stronger. The formation of PFF does not shake our foundation. In fact, we already have new and capable replacements for those who defected,” Kabuku emphasized.

Adding weight to Kabuku’s sentiments, the FDC Western Region Chairperson Robert Centenary dismissed PFF’s impact as marginal.

“PFF is still in its infancy. They have no established grassroots structures, and with elections approaching fast, they are unlikely to make any significant inroads,” Centenary stressed.

As political alignments continue to shift, it remains to be seen whether PFF will become a formidable player in Kasese or simply a passing wave in the district’s political history.

What is clear, however, is that the traditional FDC stronghold is now up for grabs, and all major political players are watching closely.
